When it comes to managing your money, it’s easy to get caught up in the usual advice: cut costs, save more, don’t splurge. But what if we flipped the script and focused on spending smarter in a way that makes us happier and aligns with our values? That’s where value-based spending comes in, helping you take control of your money and truly live richer.

Identify What Matters to You

Before diving into value-based spending, you’ve got to figure out what you truly value. For some, it might be traveling the world. For others, it could be investing in self-care, enjoying quality time with family, or supporting charitable causes. The key is that there’s no right or wrong answer—your priorities are unique to you. When you know your values, you can start spending smarter to align your money with what really matters.

Tip: Take a moment to list your top five values. These could be anything from “health” and “family” to “creativity” or “adventure.” Once you know what drives you, you’ll have a roadmap for how to take control of your money in ways that reflect your goals.

Ditch the Unnecessary Stuff

Ever notice how we sometimes spend money out of habit or pressure? Maybe you’re buying the latest gadget or subscribing to a service you barely use, just because everyone else is doing it. The problem with this kind of mindless spending is that it doesn’t add real value to your life.

When you focus on spending smarter, you can confidently say no to the things that don’t align with your goals. The best part? It doesn’t feel like deprivation—it feels empowering, because you’re taking control of your money and directing it where it counts.

Spend More Where It Counts

Here’s the fun part: value-based spending doesn’t mean being cheap or cutting out all the fun stuff. In fact, it encourages you to spend more on things that truly make you happy. For example, if you love cooking and entertaining, it might make sense to invest in a high-quality kitchen or host more dinner parties. If travel is your passion, setting aside a bigger part of your budget for vacations could be worth it. By spending smarter, you can live richer in the areas that matter most to you.

Pro tip: When you do spend on what matters, go all-in! The goal is to feel good about your spending and know that it’s enhancing your life.

It’s All About Balance

Of course, you still have to pay bills and take care of necessities, but value-based spending helps you balance these obligations with the things that make life enjoyable. By cutting back on non-essentials and prioritizing what you love, you’re truly taking control of your money.

Real-Life Example: Sarah’s Story

Let’s look at Sarah, who once felt stressed about her spending. She loved fitness, but her money was going toward trendy clothes, expensive gadgets, and nights out that didn’t add much to her life. After reflecting on her values, she realized that she cared more about her health than keeping up with the latest trends. So, she reallocated her budget—cutting back on shopping and investing in a personal trainer, new workout gear, and yoga classes. Not only did this help her stay fit, but it also gave her peace of mind that she was spending smarter and using her money to live richer.

Start Today

If you’re ready to take control of your money and live richer, start by evaluating your spending habits. Does your current budget reflect what you truly care about? If not, take small steps to redirect your money toward the things that bring you happiness and fulfillment.

In the end, value-based spending isn’t just about dollars and cents. It’s about spending smarter and living a life that feels rich—without needing a massive bank account to do it.

You Can’t Watch Yourself Age, But You Can See Its Effects Over Time

October 3, 2024 by Jay Nesbit

Jay Nesbit, “The Pharmacist Wordsmith” October 3, 2024 – Life-Changing Words Post #32

Aging is one of those sneaky things that we don’t notice in the moment. You can’t watch yourself age in real time, but one day, you look in the mirror and see the changes—a wrinkle here, a gray hair there, or maybe a new ache in your back. It’s not something that happens overnight. Instead, the effects of aging slowly reveal themselves over time. It’s like the slow accumulation of life’s experiences, all showing up on your face and body.

The Slow Accumulation of Time

In our younger years, life seems to move fast. You’re constantly growing, learning, and changing. “Getting old” feels like something far off in the future. But as time passes, little things start to appear. Maybe your knees creak a bit when you stand, or you notice you can’t eat like you used to. The changes are small, but they add up. You don’t wake up one day and feel old; you just start to notice the little signs over time. You can’t watch yourself age, but you can definitely see its effects.

The Mirror Effect: Reflections of Aging

Ever had that moment when you glance in the mirror and think, “Who is this person?” You still feel like yourself, but your reflection tells a different story. You see the lines, the gray hairs, and maybe a little less bounce in your step. But those wrinkles? They’re markers of laughter, stress, and everything in between. And those gray hairs? They’re a badge of wisdom. You can’t watch yourself age, but you can appreciate the story your reflection tells.

It’s More Than Just Physical

Aging isn’t just about the physical changes, even though they’re the most obvious. As we get older, our perspective on life shifts. The things that used to stress us out? They don’t seem as important anymore. Instead, new interests emerge, and we become more comfortable in our own skin. Sure, the body slows down a bit, but the mind and spirit have room to grow. You may not watch yourself age, but you’ll feel the inner changes as you evolve.

The Gift of Time

Aging also gives us the gift of time—time to learn, grow, and take better care of ourselves. Over the years, you start to understand the importance of rest, exercise, and healthy eating. It’s a process of trial and error, but eventually, you figure it out. While you can’t watch yourself age, you can appreciate the wisdom and experience that come with time.

Embracing the Change

Aging is inevitable, but it’s not something to fear. Yes, the changes can be strange or unwelcome at times, but they’re a reminder that we’re alive and evolving. You can’t watch yourself age day by day, but the results are there—a reflection of a life well-lived. So, instead of resisting the changes, maybe it’s time to embrace them. The next time you see yourself in the mirror, take a moment to appreciate the journey. After all, it’s far from over, and each day is a new chapter.

People Need Something to Depend On—and Something to Love

Jay Nesbit, “The Pharmacist Wordsmith” September 19, 2024 – Life-Changing Words Post #31

Something to Hold Onto

Life is full of twists and turns, and if there’s one thing we all crave, it’s something to depend on. “People Need Something to Depend On—and Something to Love” because it’s what keeps us grounded. It’s not just about the comforts of everyday routines, but the certainty that something steady exists in a world that often feels unpredictable.

Even more than stability, we need something to love. The combination of having both security and love creates the foundation for a life filled with warmth and meaning. Without them, life can feel empty and hollow, like we’re missing the very things that make it worth living.

The Need for Stability

Let’s be real, we all need stability. Not the “my house is spotless, and my life is completely organized” kind (if you’ve mastered that, teach me your ways). I’m talking about something that keeps us sane when life feels like a chaotic mess—because let’s face it, it often does.

For some, stability might come from a daily ritual, like having your coffee before the world demands anything from you. Or perhaps it’s having a go-to friend you can call when you need to vent about the fact that your favorite TV show just got canceled. Stability gives you that reassuring pat on the back, like, “Hey, it’s going to be okay, you’ve got this!”

We might not always notice it, but when we don’t have something reliable in our lives, everything feels like it’s in free fall. And let’s be honest, who wants to live in constant survival mode? I mean, sure, being spontaneous is fun, but I’m not trying to live like I’m constantly dodging meteors.

The Need for Love

Now let’s talk about love. Ah, love! The thing that makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside, like a freshly baked cookie—except without the calories. Love doesn’t have to be all violins and candlelit dinners, either. It could be the joy you feel when your dog greets you like you’ve been gone for 10 years, even though you just went to check the mail.

Love is that thing that gives life its sparkle. Whether it’s love for a person, a pet, or even a hobby (I see you, knitting enthusiasts), it’s the thing that gets you through those long days where you feel like you just can’t even. Without love, everything starts to feel a little ‘meh.’ It’s like watching a movie with no plot. Sure, the popcorn’s great, but where’s the excitement?

When you have something to love, it’s like having your very own personal cheerleader. And who doesn’t want that? Plus, love gives you stories to tell later—like that time you accidentally started a garden and ended up loving it, even though you couldn’t keep a houseplant alive to save your life.

Finding Both in Everyday Life

So, how do we find both stability and love when life feels like a never-ending obstacle course? The good news: it doesn’t have to be complicated. Dependability often comes from the simple things—like the comfort of your favorite chair waiting for you at the end of a long day or that one friend who always shows up, no matter what.

Love, on the other hand, is all around us if we take the time to notice. It could be in the warmth of a cozy blanket you wrap yourself in every night or in the joy of a hobby that makes your heart race, even if others don’t quite understand it. The truth is, finding both love and something to depend on doesn’t require grand gestures; it’s the small, everyday moments that add up to a life full of meaning.

Conclusion: A Balanced Life

At the end of the day, having something to depend on and something to love keeps us balanced, like a life-sized see-saw that hopefully doesn’t send us flying. Stability keeps us grounded, while love keeps life fun and exciting. If life ever feels too crazy or, worse, a little boring, just remember: all you really need is a little love and a little dependability (and maybe a nap).

Creating Your Retirement Bucket List: Dream Big and Make It Happen!

September 4, 2024 by Jay Nesbit

Your Retirement Adventure Awaits

Retirement is the perfect time to check off those things you’ve always wanted to do but never had the time for. Whether it’s seeing the Northern Lights, mastering the art of Italian cooking, or volunteering in your community, now’s the time to dream big.

That’s where a retirement bucket list comes in. Let’s dive into how you can create one that excites and inspires you, and more importantly, how to make those dreams a reality.

Step 1: Dream Big

Start by letting your imagination run wild. Think about the things that light you up. What have you always wanted to do? Is there a place you’ve always wanted to visit? A skill you’ve been itching to learn?

Jot everything down, no matter how big or small. This is your life, and your retirement bucket list should reflect your wildest dreams.

Step 2: Prioritize Your List

Now that you’ve got a list of dreams, it’s time to prioritize. What are the top five or ten things you absolutely must do? Don’t overthink it—go with your gut. These are the goals that should be at the top of your bucket list. The ones that make you feel excited just thinking about them.

Step 3: Plan and Save

Dreams are wonderful, but they don’t just happen on their own. It’s time to get practical. For each item on your list, think about what it will take to make it happen. Do you need to save money? Block off time? Learn a new skill? Break down each goal into manageable steps.

Start with the things you can do right now. Maybe it’s opening a savings account dedicated to your dream vacation or signing up for that cooking class you’ve been eyeing.

Tip: A simple savings plan can make a dramatic difference. Set aside a little money each month for your top goals. Over time, it adds up, bringing you closer to making those dreams a reality.

Step 4: Keep It Flexible

Life is full of surprises, and your bucket list might change over time. That’s okay! Keep your list flexible and revisit it regularly. Add new dreams, and cross off the ones you’ve achieved. Remember, this list is about joy and fulfillment, not pressure.

Step 5: Start Checking Things Off

Once you’ve planned and saved, it’s time for the best part—start checking things off your list! Whether it’s booking that dream trip or finally learning to play the guitar, take action. There’s nothing like the feeling of achieving something you’ve always wanted to do.

Step 6: Share Your Journey

Why keep all the fun to yourself? Share your bucket list with friends, family, or even online communities. You might inspire others to create their own lists, and who knows, you might find someone to join you on your adventures!

Ready to Start Your List?

Your retirement years are a golden opportunity to live out your dreams. So go ahead—dream big, plan smart, and make those bucket list items a reality. Life is meant to be enjoyed, and your retirement is just the beginning of a new adventure.

Whether it’s mastering a new language, diving into a cooking class, or exploring the world of coding, each new skill helps keep your brain in tip-top shape.

Boost Your Career Prospects with Continuing Education

In today’s fast-paced world, industries evolve quicker than we can say “update.” By engaging in continuing education, you’re not just staying relevant; you’re staying ahead. Employers appreciate individuals who show initiative and a desire to grow. Plus, adding new skills to your resume can open doors you didn’t even know existed.

The Benefits of Nature Walks for Mental Clarity and Creativity

nature walk for mental clarity
Jay Nesbit, “The Pharmacist Wordsmith” August 8, 2024 – Life-Changing Words Post #28

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share something that’s been a game-changer for me lately: the benefit of nature walks for mental clarity and creativity. You know those days when your mind feels like a tangled ball of yarn? Or when you just can’t seem to produce fresh ideas? Nature walks might be the perfect solution.

I recently found myself stuck, unable to decide on a topic for my next book. It was frustrating. Nothing seemed to click, and I felt overwhelmed. A friend suggested I take a break and spend some time outside. So, I decided to spend this past week walking through the beautiful grounds of the Chautauqua Institution.

Just so you know, for 150 years, Chautauqua has been a hub for creative exploration, educational growth, relaxation, and recreation. Learn more at chq.org.

Click here to catchup on earlier posts you may have missed.

One of the main benefits of nature walks for mental clarity and creativity is how they help clear your mind. When I stepped away from my home office and breathed in the fresh air, it was like hitting the reset button. The sights and sounds of nature—birds chirping, leaves rustling, the gentle hum of life around me—worked wonders in calming my racing thoughts.

Another huge benefit of nature walks for mental clarity and creativity is that they spark new ideas. There’s something about being in nature that ignites creativity. As I walked through the Chautauqua Institution, I practiced mindfulness, paying attention to the present moment and my surroundings. This mindfulness helped me get excited about a couple of innovative ideas for my book. It was like the natural world stimulated a part of my brain that’s usually dormant when I’m stuck indoors.

And let’s not forget the physical benefits. Moving my body, even at a leisurely pace, helped shake off the stiffness from sitting too long. It’s a win-win situation: my mind got a break, and my body felt refreshed.

If you’re looking to experience the benefits of nature walks for mental clarity and creativity, here are a few tips that worked for me:

  • Find a Nearby Green Space: It doesn’t have to be a grand forest. A local park or even a tree-lined street can do wonders.
  • Leave Your Phone Behind: Or at least put it on silent. The goal is to disconnect and let nature be the focus.
  • Take Your Time: There’s no rush. Enjoy the walk and let your mind wander.
  • Practice Mindfulness: Pay attention to the details—the colors, the sounds, the textures. It’s all part of the experience.

So, next time you’re feeling stuck or stressed, remember the benefits of nature walks for mental clarity and creativity. Try it and see how it works for you. Trust me, your mind and body will thank you.

Happy walking!
