How social media affects our mental health

November 15, 2023 by Jay Nesbit

social media apps on a cell phone

What are the consequences, and why should we be concerned?

Introduction:

In today’s fast-paced world, flooded with information on social media, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. As a behavioral health pharmacist and a dedicated patient advocate, I’m genuinely concerned about the impact of social media on our mental well-being.

This article aims to explore the often underestimated effects of social media, focusing on how it contributes to tribalism, polarization, and the devastating consequences of online bullying. My goal is to have a compassionate conversation, offer practical solutions, and avoid divisive political discourse that worsens these issues.

The impact of social media on your mental health:

We all know that social media has changed how we consume information. But what are the consequences, and why should we be concerned?

Information Overload: Imagine waking up to a flood of notifications, news headlines, and a constant stream of updates, all vying for your attention. This constant barrage can harm your mental health, causing anxiety, stress, and a constant feeling of being overwhelmed.

Tribalism and Polarization: Picture a social media feed where you mainly see posts aligning with your beliefs, while opposing views are dismissed or ridiculed. This “us vs. them” mentality that can lead to hostility, division, and a negative impact on our mental well-being.

Echo Chambers: Imagine an online space where your beliefs are constantly reinforced, and differing opinions are rare. Echo chambers, where diverse perspectives are scarce, can strengthen our existing beliefs, discourage open-mindedness, and perpetuate confirmation bias.

Online Bullying and its Consequences: Consider a personal story illustrating the severe consequences of online bullying. Sarah, a teenager, became the target of cruel messages on her social media accounts. These hurtful comments led to severe emotional distress, causing her to harm herself in a desperate attempt to escape the relentless cyberbullying.

Solutions for a healthier mind:

Recognizing the challenges is just the beginning. Let’s explore practical strategies to help you maintain a healthier state of mind in this digital age, including specific solutions for combating online bullying.

Mindful Consumption: Schedule dedicated times for checking the news and your social media accounts, ensuring you stick to your schedule. This practice not only reduces anxiety but also empowers you to regain control over the constant stream of information.

Seek Diverse Perspectives: Participate in a respectful online discussion with someone who has opposing views. Actively embracing diverse perspectives can cultivate empathy and expand your understanding, contributing to a more inclusive and mentally healthy online environment.

Community and Support: Reach out to family and friends for support when you feel overwhelmed by the digital world. Engaging with your community serves as a mental health anchor in the stormy sea of digital content.

Practice Digital Detox: Take a step back from social media and the constant flood of information for a weekend. Consider a camping trip without your phone. Respected psychologist Dr. Jean Twenge recommends regular digital detoxes to create mental space for self-reflection and self-care.

Acquire Emotional Resilience: Build emotional strength by remembering a time when you understood your negative feelings and showed kindness to yourself. Thinking about your emotions and being kind to yourself is crucial for good mental health. Recognizing and dealing with your feelings shows resilience in tough times.

Combating Online Bullying: Imagine Sarah, a teenager facing cyberbullying, taking a bold step to confide in a trusted adult. Her parents promptly reported the bullying to the school and law enforcement. As a result, the bullies faced consequences, and Sarah received the necessary emotional support to overcome the ordeal. This real-life example illustrates the tangible impact of seeking help and taking decisive action in the face of cyberbullying.

Conclusion:

In this era of digital connectivity, understanding the impact of social media on our mental health is crucial. While the challenges are significant, we have the power to proactively safeguard our well-being, combat online bullying, and support those who may be suffering.

By practicing these steps, you can navigate the digital landscape with greater optimism and empathy, ensuring a more hopeful and inspiring future for yourself and your loved ones in the digital age. Your mental health is a precious asset, deserving of the care and attention it needs in this ever-evolving landscape.

What is Financial Independence?

Financial independence is like having the keys to your dreams, allowing you to live life on your terms. Take my friend Barbara, for example. She’d always dreamt of becoming a wildlife photographer, but financial constraints kept her in a nine-to-five job. However, Barbara decided to pursue financial independence, much like a dedicated gardener tending to their plants over time.

With careful budgeting and wise investments, she cultivated her financial strength. Eventually, she left her job to pursue her passion, capturing nature’s beauty through her lens. Financial independence can be your pathway to a life where your aspirations are no longer compromised, just like Barbara’s dream of photographing the wonders of the natural world.

The Essential Steps to Reaching Financial Independence:

1. Reflect on Your Current Situation and Form a Clear Vision of Your Future

Before embarking on your journey to financial independence, it’s crucial to take a step back and assess where you currently stand. This reflection allows you to form a clear vision of where you want to be in the future. Consider your financial situation, your goals, and your aspirations. Ask yourself questions like:

  • What are my current assets and liabilities?
  • How much do I earn, save, and spend each month?
  • What are my short-term and long-term financial goals?
  • What kind of lifestyle do I envision for myself in the future?

For example, let’s say you discover that you have $10,000 in credit card debt, earn $50,000 per year, and dream of owning a home in five years. By reflecting on your current situation, you can see that paying down your debt and saving for a down payment will be essential steps on your path to financial independence.

Bullseye Goal

2. Set Clear and Achievable Financial Goals

Once you’ve reflected on your current situation and envisioned your future, the next step is to set specific and attainable financial goals. Dave Ramsey suggests creating a budget and establishing clear objectives. For instance, a goal could be to pay off $5,000 in credit card debt within the next 12 months. This specific target gives you something tangible to work towards, making your financial journey more engaging and manageable.

3. Build a Strong Emergency Fund: Your Financial Safety Net

Both Dave Ramsey and Tony Robbins emphasize the importance of having an emergency fund. Let’s say you set a goal to have three months’ worth of living expenses in your emergency fund. This could mean saving $10,000 to cover unexpected expenses like emergency medical bills or car repairs. Having this financial safety net in place provides peace of mind, ensuring that life’s curveballs won’t derail your financial progress.

4. The Debt Snowball Method: Tackling Debt Strategically

Dave Ramsey’s Debt Snowball method is a powerful strategy for eliminating debt. Start by listing your debts from smallest to largest, like a $1,000 credit card balance, a $5,000 personal loan, and a $10,000 student loan. By paying off the smallest debt first while making minimum payments on the others, you’ll experience quick victories. Once the smallest debt is gone, redirect the money towards the next one. This psychological boost can help you stay motivated and on track.

5. Invest Wisely and Diversify Your Portfolio

In his book “Money: Master the Game,” Tony Robbins recommends smart investing. Let’s say you decide to invest your savings in a diversified portfolio of stocks, bonds, and real estate. Diversification helps spread the risk and can protect your investments during market downturns. Furthermore, low-cost index funds can save you money on fees and expenses, leading to higher returns over time.

6. Increase Your Income through Side Hustles

In addition to managing your expenses, consider ways to increase your income. Suppose you decide to start a side hustle, like freelance writing, driving for a ride-sharing service, or selling handcrafted items online. By allocating the extra income to your savings or debt reduction goals, you can significantly accelerate your path to financial independence.

7. Automate Your Savings and Investments

To ensure consistent progress, automate your savings and investments. For instance, set up automatic transfers to your savings account and retirement fund right after your paycheck lands in your bank account. This approach removes the temptation to spend the money impulsively and ensures that you consistently save and invest.

8. Never Stop Learning

Financial literacy is an essential component of financial independence. Regularly educate yourself by reading books like those by Dave Ramsey, Tony Robbins, Robert Kiyosaki, and Morgan Housel, listening to financial podcasts, or attending seminars. This ongoing learning will help you stay informed about personal finance and provide valuable insights to make informed decisions.

9. Seek Professional Guidance for Planning Only

If you ever find yourself struggling with complex financial decisions, consider consulting a certified financial planner or advisor. However, make sure to choose an advisor who charges by the hour and provides guidance on creating a financial plan, rather than one who manages investments for you and charges transaction fees or a percentage of your assets. Their role is to help you develop a clear financial strategy tailored to your unique circumstances.

The Many Benefits of Financial Independence

The perks of financial independence can be truly life-changing, touching all areas of your life. Some significant advantages include:

Freedom: You get to shape your days according to your passions and priorities, experiencing a better life full of freedom.

Reduced Stress: Financial independence reduces financial anxiety and creates a stable environment, providing peace of mind and contributing to a better life.

Flexibility: It allows you to make choices based on what you value most, leading to a better life.

Security: Knowing you’re financially secure is empowering and brings a sense of freedom to your life.

Retirement Choices: Whether you retire early or later, financial independence empowers you to decide how you want to spend your retirement years and lead a better life.

The Power of Assets and Investments (Robert Kiyosaki)

Robert Kiyosaki, author of “Rich Dad Poor Dad,” emphasizes the importance of understanding assets and investments. In your journey to financial independence, focus on acquiring income-generating assets such as rental properties, stocks, or a small business. These assets can create passive income streams that move you closer to financial freedom.

Embrace the Psychology of Money (Morgan Housel)

Morgan Housel, in his book “The Psychology of Money,” highlights the significance of understanding your emotional relationship with money. Recognize the behavioral patterns that influence your financial decisions and work on building a healthy mindset towards money. This can help you avoid impulsive financial decisions and maintain discipline on your path to financial independence.

Conclusion

Achieving financial independence is like embarking on a captivating journey, one filled with both challenges and rewards. Much like a skilled navigator, you start by reflecting on your current financial landscape, carefully charting your course. As you form a clear vision of your desired future, you’re akin to a visionary architect designing the blueprint of your life.

Understanding the strategies to reach your goals is like possessing a toolkit for overcoming obstacles that may arise on your path to financial independence. With determination and the wisdom of financial experts, you’re akin to an apprentice honing their craft under the guidance of seasoned masters. Their knowledge and insights will help you stay committed to your financial goals, much like a steady hand guiding a ship through turbulent waters.

Stay focused on the life you’re diligently working towards, and you’ll be well on your way to a better future. Your journey to financial independence and a better life begins today.

Building Healthy Habits: The Foundation of a Fulfilling Life

October 21, 2023 by Jay Nesbit

Starting a workout habit

Picture this: It’s a bright, new day, and you wake up feeling energized and ready to take on the world. You might think, “Is this some kind of magic?” Nope, it’s just the power of habits at work.

Habits are those little routines that we perform automatically. From brushing our teeth in the morning to hitting the gym after work, they shape our daily lives more than we realize. But the real magic happens when we consciously cultivate positive habits that lead to a healthier and more fulfilling existence.

So, why are these habits so important? Well, think of them as the building blocks of your life’s foundation. Just like a solid foundation supports a sturdy house, healthy habits support a fulfilling life.

Here are a few reasons why they matter:

1. Consistency is Key: Healthy habits help you maintain consistency in your life. When you consistently make good choices, they become second nature. Whether it’s eating nutritious meals or sticking to a workout routine, these habits add up over time and become an integral part of who you are.

2. Boosting Well-being: Habits that prioritize your physical and mental health can significantly improve your well-being. Something as simple as taking a moment to practice mindfulness or going for a walk in nature can do wonders for your mood and overall happiness.

3. Achieving Goals: Healthy habits are your trusty sidekicks when it comes to reaching your goals. They provide structure and discipline, helping you stay on track and making those dreams of yours feel more achievable.

4. Reducing Stress: Establishing routines can reduce stress and anxiety. Knowing what to expect and having a sense of control over your day can make life’s challenges feel more manageable

5. Building Confidence: Success breeds confidence, and healthy habits are a surefire way to rack up those small daily wins. Each time you stick to your routine, you’re telling yourself, “I can do this,” and that builds self-assurance.

6. Longevity: A life filled with positive habits is often a longer one. Good choices today can lead to a healthier you tomorrow and for many years to come.

In this blog post, we’ll dive deeper into the world of habits. We’ll explore how to kickstart new ones, break free from not-so-healthy ones, and stay motivated along the way. We’ll also share some practical tips and real-life stories to inspire and guide you on your journey to a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Let’s get started!

1. Understanding the Habit Loop

Before we embark on this habit-building journey, it’s essential to understand how habits work. The science behind habits revolves around a simple loop: cue, routine, and reward.

  • Cue: This is the trigger that initiates the habit. It could be a time of day, a specific location, an emotional state, or even a particular person.
  • Routine: This is the behavior or action you take in response to the cue. It’s the habit itself, whether it’s hitting the gym, reaching for a snack, or checking your phone.
  • Reward: This is the positive outcome or satisfaction you gain from completing the routine. It’s what reinforces the habit loop and makes you want to repeat it.

Understanding this loop can help you identify the habits you want to build or change. Let’s say you want to start a daily exercise routine. Your cue might be setting your gym clothes out the night before, the routine is going to the gym, and the reward could be the post-workout endorphin rush and increased energy.

2. Start Small and Specific

One common mistake when trying to build healthy habits is biting off more than you can chew. We’ve all been there, declaring that we’re going to completely overhaul our lives overnight. But the truth is, lasting change often starts small and specific.

Instead of vowing to run a marathon, start by committing to a short daily walk or jog. Instead of completely cutting out junk food, aim to eat a healthy snack every afternoon. These slight changes are easier to stick with and can snowball into more significant transformations over time.

Group Strolling

3. Set SMART Goals

When building healthy habits, setting clear and achievable goals is crucial. The SMART criteria can help you do just that:

  • Specific: Your goal should be clear and well-defined. Instead of saying, “I want to get in shape,” say, “I want to lose 10 pounds.”
  • Measurable: You should be able to track your progress. In the case of weight loss, you can measure your success by pounds lost.
  • Achievable: Make sure your goal is realistic and within reach. Losing 10 pounds in a month, for example, might not be achievable or healthy.
  • Relevant: Your goal should align with your broader objectives. If improving your cardiovascular health is your focus, then setting a goal to run a 5k makes sense.
  • Time-bound: Give yourself a deadline to work towards. This adds a sense of urgency and helps you stay accountable.

4. Make It a Routine

Remember that habit loop we talked about earlier? To solidify a habit, you need to turn it into a routine. Consistency is key here.

Let’s say you want to develop a reading habit. Set aside a specific time each day for reading, like 20 minutes before bed. Stick to it, even on days when you don’t feel like it. Over time, your brain will associate that time with reading, making it a habit.

5. Use Positive Reinforcement

Remember the reward part of the habit loop? Use positive reinforcement to your advantage. When you complete a healthy habit, reward yourself, even if it’s something small. This reinforces the positive behavior and makes you more likely to repeat it.

6. Track Your Progress

Keep a record of your habit-building journey. It could be a journal, an app, or even a simple checklist. Tracking your progress not only helps you see how far you’ve come but also holds you accountable.

7. Don’t Be Too Hard on Yourself

Building healthy habits can be challenging, and setbacks are part of the process. Don’t beat yourself up if you slip up occasionally. Instead, focus on getting back on track and learning from your mistakes.

8. Find an Accountability Partner

Having someone to share your journey with can make a world of difference. Whether it’s a workout buddy, a friend with similar goals, or an online community, accountability partners can provide support, motivation, and a sense of camaraderie.

9. Embrace Change Gradually

If you’re trying to break free from unhealthy habits, be patient with yourself. Change takes time, and it’s okay to take gradual steps towards a healthier you. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about progress.

10. Celebrate Your Wins

Celebrate your successes, no matter how small they may seem. Whether it’s sticking to your workout routine for a week or resisting the urge to snack on junk food, acknowledge and celebrate your wins. It’s a fantastic way to stay motivated and reinforce your positive habits.

In Conclusion

Building healthy habits is not a one-size-fits-all journey. It’s a personal adventure that requires patience, persistence, and self-compassion. Remember that the habits you cultivate today will shape your tomorrow, so make them count.

As you embark on this path to a healthier and more fulfilling life, keep in mind that you have the power to change and grow. Each small step you take is a step closer to the best version of yourself. So, grab ahold of those habit-building tools and start shaping the life you’ve always dreamed of—one healthy choice at a time.

Your future self will thank you for it!

Goal Setting for Success: How to Achieve Your Dreams

October 7, 2023 by Jay Nesbit

Visualize the path forward to achieve success and reach your dreams.

Introduction

As I sit here, just hours away from achieving my dream of publishing my very first book, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible journey that led me here. It’s been a rollercoaster ride of creativity, determination, and, most importantly, setting and achieving goals.

Reflecting on this journey, I want to emphasize the importance of setting goals for success. Setting a goal, such as authoring a book, is vital in paving the way for your dreams to become reality. So, grab a cup of coffee, get cozy, and let’s dive in!

Chapter 1: The Blank Page – Defining Your Ultimate Goal

Creating a great book begins with a blank page. Your journey to make your dream come true begins the same way. Your personal goal is comparable to the vision I had when I dreamed of holding my published book in my hand. It’s your big goal, the grand achievement that you’re aiming for. Whether your dream is to be a famous chef, launch a business, explore the world, or pursue a career in art, your goal guides you.

Chapter 2: Plotting Your Story – Break It Down into Milestones

Now, picture attempting to do it all at once: cooking a brand-new dish, starting a successful company, experiencing new cultures, or creating a masterpiece in your chosen medium. It can be quite overwhelming, don’t you think? That’s where breaking your goal into smaller steps becomes essential.

In the culinary world, it could mean mastering specific techniques. In business, it might involve landing your first client. When it comes to travel, it’s about planning your first adventure. Achieving any dream through successful goal setting involves setting and completing a series of shorter-term goals.

Chapter 3: The Daily Recipe – Daily Goals Matter

As a chef follows recipe directions, an entrepreneur takes small daily steps towards building their business. Similarly, a traveler plans daily explorations, and an artist dedicates regular time to their craft. These daily goals are the ingredients that make up the bigger picture. They ensure that progress is steady and that you’re continually moving closer to your dreams.

A masterpiece painting

Chapter 4: Refining Your Masterpiece – Adapt and Improve

Much like an artist who adjusts brush strokes or a chef who refines a recipe based on feedback, success often involves adaptation. Entrepreneurship may require pivoting in your business model. Travel may mean changing your itinerary. And art might involve experimenting with new techniques. Embrace the process of learning from your experiences and making necessary changes.

Chapter 5: Sharing Your Creation – Achieving Your Goal

Just as a chef presents their signature dish to the world, an entrepreneur launches their business. Similarly, a traveler documents their journey, and an artist exhibits their work. Achieving your long-term goal is the grand unveiling of your creation. It’s the moment when you see your hard work, dedication, and effective goal setting pay off, regardless of the field you’re in.

Chapter 6: Setting New Challenges – Continual Growth and New Goals

Once you’ve achieved your long-term goal, don’t stop there. Just as a chef explores new cuisines, an entrepreneur looks for ways to expand their business, a traveler sets their sights on new destinations, and an artist continues to evolve their craft. Continually setting new goals keeps the journey exciting, ensures personal growth, and opens the door to even greater achievements.

Conclusion: Write Your Own Success Story

As I stand on the verge of achieving my goal of publishing my book, I can’t help but emphasize the power of effective goal setting. Regardless of your dreams and aspirations, whether they involve culinary excellence, entrepreneurship, globetrotting adventures, or artistic expression, the process of success shares common threads: a focused vision, breaking down big tasks into smaller goals, consistent effort, and the ability to adapt and learn from your experiences.

So, whatever your dream looks like, remember that the process of achievement is as important as the destination. Set your long-term goal, break it down into manageable steps, work on it every day, adapt when needed, and watch your success story unfold. Your dreams are invaluable, and every goal you set is a stepping-stone that brings you closer to turning those dreams into reality.

Now, go out there and write your own success story, one goal at a time!

The Role of Failure in Personal Growth: Myth or Reality?

September 23, 2023 by Jay Nesbit

We all have to experience failure before we can find success.

Introduction

I was listening to a recent episode of the Hidden Brain podcast, and it got me thinking about how we often see success as something achieved easily, without any bumps along the way. But is that how it really works? Or do we need to face failure to grow as individuals? In this blog post, I want to explore the connections between failure and personal growth, showing that they often go hand in hand on our journey to becoming better versions of ourselves.

Section 1: The Myth of Instant Personal Growth

In our culture, we often admire people who seem to become better versions of themselves overnight. But did they really change that quickly? If you look closer, you’ll see the truth is more complex.

Take Maya Angelou, the famous poet and author, for example. She faced tough times, including a difficult childhood and moments of self-doubt. Angelou didn’t suddenly transform overnight; her personal growth happened through her efforts to slowly overcome these challenges.

The idea of instant personal growth ignores the importance of overcoming our fears, staying focused, being persistent, and reflecting deeply – all of which are crucial parts of ‘real’ personal development. Instead of avoiding failure, successful people use it to help them grow.

Section 2: Embrace Failure for Learning

Failure is a great teacher. When we make mistakes or encounter setbacks, we get valuable chances to learn and get better. It pushes us to rethink our beliefs, improve our strategies, and see things from new angles.

Think about learning a new skill, like playing a musical instrument. You’ll hit wrong notes and face difficulties, but each mistake means progress and an opportunity to get better.

Research in psychology supports the idea that mistakes help us grow. They encourage us to adapt and gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world.

Section 3: The Role of Failure in Skill Development

When you’re learning something new, whether it’s a language, a hobby, or a life skill, you’re bound to experience failure. Mistakes are a natural part of gaining new skills or knowledge.

Imagine someone trying to learn a new language. Mispronunciations, grammar errors, and misunderstandings are all part of the learning process. Each mistake made while using the new language helps improve fluency.

If you’ve ever been afraid of failing when taking on new challenges, remember this: making mistakes is a crucial part of the learning journey. Embrace those early slip-ups as signs of progress, NOT REASONS TO QUIT.

Use failure to learn and grow and not as an excuse to give up.

Section 4: Personal Growth Through Resilience

Failure isn’t just about getting better at something; it also helps us grow personally and become more resilient. We all face tough times – failed relationships, stagnant careers, or other life challenges. These moments truly test our resilience.

Think of Nelson Mandela’s inspiring story. He spent 27 years in prison for his beliefs but emerged with unwavering determination. His personal growth during those challenging years played a big role in South Africa’s transition to democracy.

Just like Mandela found strength in tough times, we can use our experiences to grow and become more resilient in our own lives.

Section 5: Inspiring Personal Growth Stories

Let’s look at some other real-life examples that vividly show the strong connection between failure and personal growth:

  • Oprah Winfrey: Before becoming the media mogul, we know today, Oprah had a difficult childhood marked by poverty and abuse. Her personal growth journey involved overcoming significant obstacles and inspiring millions worldwide.
  • Malala Yousafzai: Malala’s story represents courage and resilience. After surviving a nearly fatal attack by the Taliban, she dedicated her life to advocating for girls’ education and empowerment.
  • Your Personal Journey: Take a moment to think about your own life journey. What failures or challenges have contributed to your personal growth? How have these experiences shaped the person you are today?

Conclusion

In conclusion, it’s important to understand that personal growth often involves facing and learning from failures. Failure isn’t the opposite of growth; it’s a crucial part of the journey. It teaches us valuable lessons, encourages growth, and tests our ability to bounce back. Embrace failure as a helpful teacher and a companion on your path to becoming the best version of yourself.

When setbacks happen, see them as opportunities to learn, grow, and get better. Instead of fearing failure, consider it a necessary and transformative part of your unique personal growth story.

I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the role of failure in your personal growth. Your insights and stories are an essential part of the ongoing conversation in our community.
