The Pharmacist Wordsmith – July 10, 2025 – Life-Changing Words Post #52
The fireworks are over. The grill’s been cleaned. The flag shirts are folded and back in the drawer.
But just because the Fourth of July has passed doesn’t mean the idea of freedom should fade into the background again.
If anything, now is the perfect time to sit with the question:
What does it really mean to be free?
Let’s start with the big-picture kind—democracy.
The Freedom We Share
Living in a democracy means we get a voice. We can speak our minds, vote for our leaders, and question the system when it’s not working. That’s something people in a lot of other places still fight and sacrifice for.
But freedom in a democratic sense isn’t just about what we can do. It’s about what we choose to do with those rights.
Do we stay informed?
Do we show up to vote?
Do we care about the freedoms of people who don’t look or think like us?
Because freedom isn’t just a right—it’s a responsibility. If we don’t actively use it, we risk losing it.
The Freedom That’s Personal
Zooming in a bit—there’s also the freedom that hits closer to home.
Personal freedom means living in a way that feels true to you. Not constantly bending to other people’s expectations. Not letting fear, regret, or old stories run your life. It’s the ability to choose how you show up, how you speak, and how you spend your days.
But let’s be honest—sometimes we forget we have that freedom.
We stay stuck in routines that drain us.
We tell ourselves we “have to” do things we don’t actually have to do.
We wait for permission we don’t need.
Being free, in a personal sense, often means getting real with yourself. No more blaming your boss or your upbringing or bad luck. It means taking the keys back.

What Are You Doing With Your Freedom?
So now that the holiday has come and gone, maybe it’s time for a quieter kind of reflection. Not about fireworks, but about everyday choices:
- Are you living in a way that feels free?
- Where are you still acting like you’re stuck?
- What’s one step you could take toward more honesty, more courage, or more peace?
Freedom isn’t just about waving a flag. It’s about how we live.
Not just one day a year, but every single day.
And it starts with remembering: you’re more free than you think.
“Freedom is not the absence of commitments, but the ability to choose—and commit myself to—what is best for me.”
— Paulo Coelho
