The Pharmacist Wordsmith – November 27, 2025 – Life-Changing Words Post #62
I graduated from pharmacy school in 1977.
Forty-eight years later, I’m still here — still wearing the white coat, still listening, still showing up for people who need help.
And after all these years, I’ve learned something that doesn’t show up in textbooks: community pharmacy looks simple from the outside… until you step behind the counter.
Please read to the end and share your story to be included in my upcoming book!
The Part Most People Never See
When you walk into a pharmacy, it looks calm.
But behind that counter, the pace is unbelievable.
Phones ringing.
Insurance rejections popping up every few minutes.
A line at the counter.
A line at the drive-thru.
Flu shots, COVID shots, shingles shots.
A prescription that suddenly needs prior authorization.
A doctor’s office that closed ten minutes ago.
And through all of that, the pharmacist is supposed to be perfect.
Not “pretty accurate.”
Perfect.
That’s a lot to ask of anyone.
The Emotional Weight of the Job
People think we just count pills.
If only.
We’re also the ones who:
- Calm a scared parent
- Explain a diagnosis someone wasn’t ready to hear
- Catch a dangerous interaction
- Help a caregiver who’s running on empty
- Translate medical jargon into human language
And the techs?
They’re the backbone of the whole operation. I’ve worked with some absolute heroes — people who kept the pharmacy running on days when it felt like everything was falling apart.

Why I’m Finally Saying This Out Loud
After nearly five decades in this profession, I feel a responsibility to speak up.
Part of my legacy is advocating for the people behind the counter — and for the health and safety of the patients who trust us. Too many pharmacists and techs are working in conditions that aren’t safe for them or the people they’re trying to help.
We can do better.
We have to do better.
And telling the truth is a good place to start.
Share Your Story (Because It Matters)
If you’re a pharmacist or technician working in a community pharmacy, I’d love to hear from you.
Your daily reality. Your close calls. Your moments of pride. The things you wish the world understood.
And if you’re a patient, family member, or friend who’s seen the pressure your pharmacy team is under, I want to hear from you too.
Your perspective matters just as much. Sometimes the people watching from the outside see things we don’t always notice ourselves.
No need to make it perfect.
Just make it honest.
Send your story — anonymous or not — and I’ll treat it with care.

Together, we can shine a light on what community pharmacy is really like… and maybe improve it for the next generation.
